The ‘Jewel in the Crown’ of Manchester courses, the club embarked on a very positive approach to the problems of their clay based greens and decided to reconstruct all the putting surfaces and some of the greenside bunkering. Despite being low lying and beside the R. Mersey, the works began in the autumn and the contractors, J. Greasley Ltd., worked through the winter months to drain all the green sub bases and green surfaces. The existing greens turf was stripped and returned to the final levels and the course re-opened onto its new greens in late June. The entire project lasted barely 9 months and included a new irrigation system .
